THE OFFICIAL CONCLUSION
ATIC concluded this was probably a meteor -- and on the available
evidence, that conclusion is well-reasoned. The qualifier
"probably" rather than "was" is appropriately cautious given the
limited documentation, but the overall picture fits well within
what is expected for a significant fireball event.
WHAT THE EVIDENCE SHOWS
On the evening of 2 April 1952 at 2045 CST, a large, bright
object was observed from multiple locations in the Temple, Texas
area. The description is consistent across the brief summary:
green coloring with a red and yellow tail, spherical in
appearance, with a duration of 10 to 40 seconds. The object
appeared to the west of Temple and was observed from at least
three separate ground locations -- Temple, Stephensville, and
Evant -- plus an aerial sighting at Evant. Newspapers covered
the event. Fifteen Air Force personnel are listed as sources
alongside civilian and military observers.
The most significant observational detail in the comments is
that the object appeared to "drop" two or three smaller balls,
which burned out separately before or as the main object
disappeared. This fragmentation behavior is well-documented in
fireball events and supports a meteoritic origin.
WHAT THE EVIDENCE SHOWS AND WHAT GIVES ME PAUSE
The green coloring with a red and yellow tail is a classic
signature for a large meteor burning through the atmosphere.
Different metals and compounds in the meteoroid's composition
produce characteristic spectral colors as they ablate, with
green particularly common in fireballs. The fragmentation --
dropping smaller burning pieces -- is exactly what one would
expect from a stony or mixed-composition meteoroid breaking
apart under aerodynamic stress.
The duration of 10 to 40 seconds is at the longer end for a
fireball but within the range of a shallow-entry trajectory.
The multi-location simultaneous observation from Evant,
Stephensville, and Temple -- spread across a broad area of
Central Texas -- is consistent with a significant fireball
event, where the same object can be visible from observers
separated by 50 miles or more.
The one phrase that earns a second look is "straight and level
maneuver." Meteors do not fly straight and level in the
conventional sense -- they follow a ballistic arc. However,
for an observer watching a fireball at a very shallow entry
angle, or one that is moving largely perpendicular to the
observer's line of sight, the path can appear nearly horizontal.
The ATIC record does not try to explain this away, nor does it
flag it as problematic, treating it as consistent with the
overall meteor evaluation.
The aerial sighting at Evant is a minor noteworthy element.
An airborne observer seeing the same object as ground observers
is consistent with a fireball, which would be visible over a
wide area and at altitude.
BOTTOM LINE
The official evaluation is sound. Green fireball with colored
tail, fragmentation, multi-location observation, newspaper
coverage, and a 10-to-40-second duration add up to a compelling
case for a significant meteor event over Central Texas. The
"straight and level" description can be accounted for by
viewing geometry. Nothing in this thin record argues against
the meteor interpretation. The "probably" qualifier is the
right hedge given the minimal documentation, but there is
no reason to think the conclusion is wrong.
