For years I have known about a collection of documents sitting in
the public domain that deserves far more attention than it gets.
Between 1947 and 1969, the United States Air Force ran a program
called Project Blue Book — an official, government-funded
investigation into unidentified aerial phenomena. Thousands of
cases. Hundreds of investigators. One uncomfortable bottom line:
some of what people reported simply could not be explained.
The program was quietly closed in December 1969. The files were
declassified. And then, for the most part, they sat.
Until now.

exactly as the Air Force left them.
Some of what is in there is mundane. Weather balloons.
Misidentified aircraft. Venus on a clear night. But some of it
is not, and the Air Force knew it. 74 cases closed with a single
word: Unidentified.
That number has always stayed with me.
