This is a case where the official explanation is probably correct -- and the file makes a better case for it than the local investigators make against it. WHAT THE EVIDENCE SHOWS At approximately 7:20 PM CST on the evening of May 24, 1962, seven civilians in four locations across west-central Indiana -- Portland Mills, Rockville, Greencastle, and Indianapolis -- observed a brief but spectacular aerial event lasting three to five seconds. The object was bell shaped with an elongated tail, multicolored (white, blue, yellow, orange, red), producing an incandescent glow and an apparent 15-foot flaming exhaust trail. It made no sound. It moved east at high speed, disappearing over the horizon for some observers and instantaneously behind trees for others. All seven witnesses gave consistent accounts: same relative size, same path, same colors. The geographic spread of observers is notable. Portland Mills and Rockville are separated by approximately 45 miles; Indianapolis is another 70 miles further east. An object simultaneously visible from all these locations was at significant altitude, covering a wide arc of sky. This is exactly the geometry expected of a large bolide burning up in the upper atmosphere. WHAT THE OFFICIAL CONCLUSION MISSED OR GOT RIGHT The ATIC reasoning in Field 11 is careful: they identify the fireball conclusion explicitly, note that the only other phenomenon that looks like this is satellite re-entry, confirm no satellite re-entry was documented for that time and location, and conclude that a large natural fireball is therefore the most probable explanation. That is sound deductive reasoning, and it is correct. The more interesting document is Section K of the staff message, where radar techs TSGT Tarr and SSGT King dissent. Their conclusion is that the object "could be a self-powered projectile" -- essentially a missile. They get there because they found the combination of straight level flight, high speed, and consistent witness accounts inconsistent with a natural phenomenon. This dissent deserves engagement rather than dismissal, but it does not hold up well. The multicolor spectral signature (white through red, described explicitly as resembling extremely hot metal) is the ionization signature of atmospheric ablation -- not of any known missile exhaust. Rocket exhaust in 1962 would produce a different color pattern and, crucially, substantial noise. This object made none, even in calm evening air. The apparent "15-foot exhaust tail" is an observer's angular size estimate, almost certainly foreshortened by the high-altitude trajectory; a meteor's actual ionization trail stretches for miles but can appear compact when viewed nearly head-on. The apparent "straight and level" flight for first observers and "descending" for second observers is entirely consistent with a single object at high altitude crossing different apparent angles of view from geographically separated positions -- this is standard fireball geometry. And the duration (3-5 seconds) is squarely in the range of meteors burning through the mesosphere. What TSGT Tarr and SSGT King demonstrate is expertise in tracking aircraft on radar, not in identifying bolide phenomenology. Their instinct to treat a fast-moving bright object as a self-powered projectile is professionally understandable but scientifically misplaced. BOTTOM LINE This is one of the cleaner ATIC determinations in the archive. The fireball conclusion is supported by the color sequence, duration, wide geographic visibility, total silence, and the absence of any documented satellite or missile activity. ATIC explicitly checked the satellite re-entry possibility and ruled it out. The most useful thing this file preserves is the contrast between ATIC's analytical process and the local investigators' field instincts. Both operated in good faith. One was right. The sky over Indiana that evening in May 1962 almost certainly put on a natural light show.
