THE OFFICIAL CONCLUSION
The USAF evaluation of "Probably Aircraft" is defensible and
the investigator's reasoning is sound as far as it goes. Red
lights are consistent with aircraft navigation and anti-
collision lighting. Disappearance behind clouds is expected
behavior for any airborne object. The windshield-reflection
hypothesis was considered and ruled out. On a pure checklist
basis this case closes cleanly.
WHAT GIVES ME PAUSE
The "childs rulers" description is the most unusual element
here and it is the one the official record passes over without
comment.
The observer did not say "two lights side by side." They
reached for a specific geometric metaphor -- parallel rulers,
approximately 3 inches apart in apparent angular size, held
presumably at arm's length through a windshield. That is a
very precise spatial comparison for a 30-second observation
from a moving vehicle at night. It suggests the two lights
maintained a rigid, consistent separation throughout the
sighting -- they moved together as a unit rather than as
independent points.
For conventional aircraft this matters. Navigation lights on
a fixed-wing aircraft appear to change their angular
relationship constantly as the aircraft banks, turns, or
passes overhead. A rigid, ruler-like parallel pairing held
steady for 30 seconds is more consistent with an object
moving directly away from or toward the observer on a
constant heading -- or with a single object carrying two
lights at fixed separation.
THE SPEED QUESTION
"Moving very fast" combined with a 30-second observation
and no recorded compass bearing is an odd combination. If
the objects were crossing the observer's field of view at
high angular velocity, 30 seconds would place them across
a wide arc of sky -- yet no course was recorded and the
only termination event noted is cloud cover. If they were
moving fast in terms of true airspeed but at high altitude
(reducing apparent angular velocity), the "very fast"
description would be harder to account for from a ground
observer's perspective.
The investigator did not attempt to reconcile these details.
THE OBSERVATION CONDITIONS
A civilian observer, moving vehicle, 7:15 PM local in
August (civil twilight or just past it in Ohio), looking
through a windshield. These are genuinely degraded
conditions that favor misidentification. Two aircraft in
formation or on converging approaches to Dayton's airports
(Vandalia sits immediately north of what is now Dayton
International) could reasonably produce this observation.
The area's proximity to Wright-Patterson AFB is also worth
noting -- military traffic at that location was common and
sometimes fast.
BOTTOM LINE
"Probably Aircraft" is the most parsimonious explanation
and I would not argue it is wrong. But the geometric
precision of the observer's ruler description deserved
more attention than it received. A formation of two
aircraft on a constant heading away from the observer,
at relatively low altitude given the proximity to Dayton
approach paths, accounts for most of what is reported.
What it does not fully account for is why a civilian
familiar enough with aircraft to not report the observation
as extraordinary nonetheless described the lights in terms
specific enough to note their parallel geometry and
approximate angular spacing. Most aircraft sightings do
not produce that level of spatial detail.
Not unidentified. But not fully explained either.
