"In the N.Y. Times of June 2, I noticed an article about
flying saucers, and that you welcomed [any information]
on unidentified object sighted. So here goes!
Last Monday, [May 31,] at about 10:15 AM I was between
Concord & Lochmere N.H., when my attention was caught
by a strange very white elongated object overhead. It
was going at an unbelievable speed; so that it looked
as though it was falling straight down like [hand-drawn
shape -- appears to depict a disc or oval oriented
vertically, i.e., a saucer viewed on end; consistent
with observer's description of object as very long and
narrow]. It was going in a perfectly straight line
right ahead of us + was seen for 8 to 10 seconds I
guess, then all of a sudden the whole thing just
disappeared; it didn't just get"

UNIDENTIFIED -- but the form is unusually candid about what
that means here. The evaluator wrote: "Letter report - not
complete. Data for evaluation as complete as possible. For
brief sighting no conclusion on this information, therefore,
UNIDENTIFIED." This is a data-gap classification, not a
finding of genuine anomaly. The Air Force had a letter and
nothing else, and said so plainly.
WHAT THE EVIDENCE SHOWS

On the morning of May 31, 1954, a woman from Nashua, New
Hampshire was riding in a car with her husband somewhere
between Concord and Lochmere -- roughly 25 to 30 miles of
central New Hampshire highway -- when she spotted a white,
elongated object overhead. It was in view for 8 to 10 seconds
before disappearing abruptly. She was sufficiently startled
to exclaim aloud to her husband; he did not look up in time.
The object's most notable characteristics, as she described
them in her June 4 letter to ATIC: extreme speed ("unbelievable"
is her word and appears quoted on the form), an apparent
descending trajectory that suggested vertical fall, motion
in a perfectly straight line, and a sudden complete
disappearance while still appearing full-sized -- no shrinking,
no fading. The sky was a dark grayish blue against which the
object's whiteness made it "stand out so plain." The shape
was very long and narrow. At one point in the letter rather
than reaching for words, she drew it: an oval or disc depicted
vertically on end -- consistent with a disc-shaped object seen
edge-on, which would present as exactly the elongated narrow
profile she described verbally.
The observer wrote after reading a New York Times article of
June 2, 1954 reporting that ATIC welcomed sighting reports.
No follow-up interview, weather data, or corroborating reports
are present in the file.
POINTS OF INTEREST / WHAT GIVES ME PAUSE

The description maps reasonably well onto a daytime fireball
or bright meteor: white elongated appearance (consistent with
an ionization trail or ablating bolide), extreme apparent
speed, a trajectory that could read as steeply descending
depending on the observer's viewing angle, and an abrupt
disappearance when the object burned out. The 8-to-10 second
duration is within the range of a notable fireball event.
Daytime meteors bright enough to catch a casual observer's
eye are uncommon but not rare.
The "still a large object" when it disappeared is the detail
that most strains a simple meteor explanation. Fireballs
typically do shrink or dim before extinguishing, though a
sudden burnout at altitude is possible. The observer was
emphatic on this point, noting specifically that it did not
fade gradually.
One witness, in a moving car, 8 to 10 seconds, no follow-up.
The husband's corroboration failed; he was the only other
person positioned to confirm the observation and he missed
it. These are significant limitations that ATIC acknowledged
by classifying the case as incomplete.
BOTTOM LINE

The UNIDENTIFIED label here means "we don't know, and we
don't have enough to find out" -- and the evaluator said
exactly that. The honest assessment is that the description
is consistent with a daytime bolide or fireball: the speed,
whiteness, elongated shape, steep apparent trajectory, and
abrupt disappearance all fit. Without meteorological records,
corroborating observations, or any follow-up, that remains
a hypothesis rather than a conclusion. The observer was a
credible adult who described her experience clearly and with
appropriate uncertainty about what she saw. The case sits
in the large category of brief single-witness sightings that
resist evaluation because the data simply isn't there.
