SUPPLEMENTAL TRANSCRIPTION -- RECORD CARD FIELDS NOT CAPTURED

The following data is taken from supporting documents and has
no direct equivalent on the record card.
AIRCRAFT INVOLVED: Two jet aircraft on wind-drift tracking
mission, described as F-86's in the 1950
OSI interview and Spot Intelligence Report,
and as "F-84's I believe" in the MIT 1952
letter. The 1950 contemporaneous documents
consistently state F-86's. Pressure altitude
30,000 ft.; IAS 250 MPH; corrected air speed
420 MPH; true ground speed 419 MPH;
compass course 333°; run length 62.5 miles.
OBSERVER QUALIFICATIONS: Lead observer (name redacted in most
documents, identified as "LIGDA" in the
OSI interview page 3) was MIT Research
Associate since 1946, Staff Weather Officer
with 67th Fighter Wing, Massachusetts Air
National Guard, radar experience since 1943,
rank of Major. Two additional witnesses
(analyst and electronics technician on same
project) confirmed the radar returns.
SPEED ESTIMATE: Approximately 1,320 miles per hour (22 miles
per minute), per both the MIT 1952 letter
and the 1950 OSI interview. The F-86 true
ground speed was 419 MPH.
TURN FORCES: MIT 1952 letter: approximately 11-12 G
(calculated from turn geometry). Observer's
27 Sept 1950 letter to Tuttle (contemporaneous):
"more than five G's" (described as conservative
estimate).
SIGNAL CHARACTERISTICS: Object's radar return was saturated (maximum
strength). Two F-86's in close formation
produced approximately two-thirds saturation.
The unknown return was therefore stronger than
the paired jets. Object was confirmed on both
R Scope and PPI Scope independently. Confirmed
not a hydrometeor -- gave steady, solid echo
of moderate strength.
PILOT OBSERVATION: Pilots advised by VHF radio to watch for
closing aircraft. Reported unable to see any
other aircraft. Attributed poor visibility
to haze below flight level and light haze
above. Object estimated at 25,000-35,000 ft;
jets at 30,000 ft -- relative altitude
undetermined.
SECURITY HANDLING: Same day (21 September 1950), Weather Officer
at Otis Field (Major Tuttle) called MIT and
requested matter be treated as confidential.
Following day, two men from Boston Office of
Special Investigations visited MIT. OSI
Spot Intelligence Report filed 5 October 1950.
MIT did not formally report to any other

CASE ANALYSIS -- Claude Sonnet 4.6

THE OFFICIAL CONCLUSION
UNIDENTIFIED. The record card states it plainly and without
qualification: "Case is carried as Unidentified." This case was
evaluated as F-2 (Probably True, Usually Reliable Source) by the
USAF OSI District Commander at the time of the initial report.
Nothing in the subsequent document trail changes or challenges
that assessment.
WHAT THE EVIDENCE SHOWS
This case has one very clean quality that is easy to overlook:
it is entirely radar. There is no witness who looked out a window,
no pilot who spotted something at altitude, no ground observer
straining to identify a light in the sky. What exists is a
calibrated scientific instrument, operated by three professional
researchers at MIT, producing two consistent scope presentations
(R Scope and PPI Scope) of an anomalous return that behaved in
ways no known aircraft could account for.
The lead observer's qualifications matter here. He was not a
curious civilian who happened to be near a radar set. He was an
MIT Research Associate with six years of experience in weather
radar, a Staff Weather Officer in the Massachusetts Air National
Guard with radar experience since 1943, and held the rank of
Major. He had arranged this tracking mission as a professional
favor to the staff weather officer at Otis Air Force Base and
knew his equipment well. The two additional witnesses -- an
analyst and an electronics technician on the same project --
independently confirmed what they saw on the scopes.
The circumstances of the sighting were controlled. MIT was
tracking two jet aircraft on a wind-drift measurement run.
They had radio contact with the pilots on VHF throughout. The
known aircraft were producing consistent, expected radar returns
at approximately two-thirds scope saturation. The unknown return
appeared separately, on a converging course, and was saturated --
producing a stronger signal than the two jets in close formation.
A saturated return implies a large and highly reflective target.
The lead observer noted explicitly that "it gave an excellent
radar echo which could not be mistaken for anything else and in
all respects except for the velocity seemed a normal radar target."
The behavioral sequence, as reconstructed from the Winds Aloft
Computation Chart and the observer's own account, is precise:
the object approached from the south-southeast on a course
converging with the F-86 flight path; it crossed their track
approximately two and a half miles ahead of them; it executed
a sharp right turn; it passed directly over or under the jets
(the echoes merged on both scopes simultaneously); it then
headed toward Boston. The observer described this sequence as
"a perfect interceptor pass."
Speed was estimated at approximately 1,320 miles per hour.
The F-86's were doing 419 MPH true ground speed. The unknown
was moving at more than three times their velocity. In 1950,
no operational aircraft in any air force reached 1,320 MPH.
The F-86 Sabre's maximum speed was approximately 685 MPH.
The Bell X-1 had exceeded Mach 1 in 1947 but was a
short-burn rocket research plane operating from an air-launch,
never near this location or on any operational mission profile.
The turn geometry is perhaps more telling than the speed. The
estimated G-loading of 11-12 G (MIT 1952 letter) or conservatively
more than 5 G (observer's contemporaneous letter) for the known
turn radius at the estimated speed represents a structural and
physiological limit well beyond any 1950 aircraft or pilot.
The observer remarked on this directly: "The turn was utterly
fantastic, I don't think the human frame could absorb it, but if
the object was radio controlled, it had no particular business
flying on such courses on planes occupied on legitimate business."
POINTS OF INTEREST -- WHAT GIVES ME PAUSE
The timing of the security response is worth noting. The same
day as the incident, the Weather Officer at Otis Air Force Base
called MIT and requested confidentiality. The following day,
two OSI agents arrived at MIT in person. This suggests that
either the Otis Field radar also detected the object (though no
such record appears in this file), or that the Air Force was
already aware of something worth suppressing immediately. The
Spot Intelligence Report characterizes the MIT group's letter to
Tuttle as "the first formal report on this occurrence," implying
there may have been informal awareness at Otis beforehand.
The aircraft type discrepancy is a minor puzzle. The 1950 OSI
documents consistently identify the jets as F-86's. The 1952
MIT letter says "F-84's I believe." Two years had passed when
that letter was written and the observer hedges with "I believe."
The 1950 documents are more reliable on this specific point. The
distinction matters less for the analysis of the unknown return
than for understanding what the radar operators expected to see
on their scopes.
The observer's own candor is remarkable. In his 27 September
1950 letter to Major Tuttle, he wrestled openly with what he
had observed: "The whole thing doesn't seem to make sense as
you will discover when you reflect a moment about it." He noted
the "very good radar echo" implies irregular surfaces and
comparatively large size -- "large enough so the pilots might
have had a good chance to see it." He closed by suggesting
that running another mission might "lure it out again," and
expressed genuine regret at not having used motion picture
cameras in conjunction with the radar.
The one standard prosaic explanation for anomalous radar returns
is anomalous propagation (AP) -- atmospheric ducting that bends
radar beams and produces phantom ground returns. AP returns are
well understood: they tend to be weather-correlated, they produce
diffuse or extended echoes, and they do not track in defined
geometric courses relative to aircraft. The observer explicitly
confirmed this return was not a hydrometeor of any kind, gave
a steady solid echo, and was corroborated on two independent
scope types simultaneously. AP does not produce saturated,
maneuver-correlated signals on both R and PPI presentations at
the same time.
BOTTOM LINE
This is a technically clean case that resists conventional
explanation. The observers were qualified. The equipment was
properly calibrated. Three people confirmed the return
independently. The signal characteristics were inconsistent
with known atmospheric phenomena. The observed velocity and
turn performance exceeded the demonstrated limits of any 1950
aircraft. The official UNIDENTIFIED classification is honest
and well-founded.
What was it? The record does not say, and I will not claim
to know what the MIT Weather Radar Research Group tracked over
Cape Cod on the morning of 21 September 1950. What can be said
is that they tracked something with physical size sufficient
to produce a stronger radar return than two fighter jets,
traveling at speeds and executing turns that no human-made
aircraft of that era could perform, appearing to execute a
deliberate interception of the tracked flight before heading
inland toward Boston.
The pilot who wrote the official fighter doctrine manual would
have recognized the maneuver pattern immediately. The MIT
observer did too. He called it a perfect interceptor pass.
