co-pilot of Capital Airlines Flight 841 observed a large,
round, yellowish-white object near Cleveland, Ohio at
approximately 20,000 feet altitude. The object was stationary
over Cleveland, then moved northwest. As it came from the
north and passed ahead of the aircraft at an estimated 40 to
50 miles distance, the pilots turned to pursue it. The object
accelerated ahead of them and disappeared over the horizon
northwest of Akron. Total observation time: approximately 8
minutes.
The physical description is consistent across the ATIC form
and both teletype documents: round, large, yellowish white,
no sound. The object cycled between brilliant and dim
repeatedly -- not a steady light source but a pulsing or
rotating one. The INT 7-054 report specifies "APPEARED
BRILLANT THEN WENT TO DIM AND BACK TO BRILLANT," the cycling
noted in each account.
Both pilots explicitly stated the object was not a star or
jet. This is not a casual observation. Commercial airline
pilots are among the most experienced sky observers in any
population -- they routinely identify stars, planets, and
aircraft under varying conditions, at altitude, at night.
Their categorical rejection of both explanations is a
substantive professional assessment, not layman bafflement.

did not merely watch the object; they turned to pursue it
and were outrun. In July 1957, Capital Airlines operated
propeller-driven aircraft -- likely a Lockheed Constellation
or Douglas DC-6/7 class -- with cruise speeds in the range
of 280 to 340 knots. Whatever they chased was faster. At
20,000 feet with clear skies and good visibility, two
professional aviators attempting a deliberate intercept and
failing to close the distance is a documented operational
fact in this record, not an anecdote.
The hovering phase is equally important. An object stationary
at 20,000 feet over Cleveland for any period before beginning
directed movement is not consistent with balloons, meteors,
or most astronomical misidentifications. It is consistent
with aircraft holding position, though no known 1957
aircraft type would explain the subsequent speed advantage
over a pursuing airliner.
The altitude of 20 Angels places the object in standard
commercial cruise airspace -- exactly where a commercial
flight would expect to be clear of conflicting traffic. The
presence of the object in this airspace, visible for 8
minutes, should have generated Air Traffic Control records
or radar returns from the Cleveland area radar network. The
652nd AC&W Squadron filing this report as a visual-only case
with no radar data noted (8/ NEG in the teletype) is the
same gap observed in the Dallas case -- a radar station
forwarding a visual UFOB report without radar annotation.
Whether any Cleveland-area radar was queried is not
documented here.
The direct routing of INT 7-054 to the Director of
Intelligence at HQ USAF -- bypassing the standard chain
and going straight to Washington -- suggests someone in the
reporting chain regarded this as worthy of senior attention.
That judgment appears to have been correct based on the
observer credentials and the active intercept attempt.
BOTTOM LINE

This is the strongest case in this eval batch on observer
quality and behavioral evidence combined. Two professional
commercial pilots, one witnessed object, hovering then
directed flight, active pursuit attempt that failed, explicit
rejection of prosaic explanations by the observers themselves.
The luminosity cycling, the hovering phase, and the
ability to outrun a pursuing airliner are three separate
characteristics that together resist conventional explanation.
The UNIDENTIFIED conclusion is the honest result of the
evidence in this file. The missing radar data from a radar
station that filed the report is the same gap as Dallas --
and in a commercial flight corridor at cruise altitude, that
absence is harder to explain away.
